I got to the venue a little bit later than I wanted, arriving at 7:00. There
was a pretty big crowd outside of a few hundred people. The doors opened at
8:00, and we were led inside where we would wait for the hour until the mighty
SLAYER would take the stage.
Well, that hour passed pretty quickly! The house music they played was good, with lots of Anthrax, old Metallica and some Sepultura mixed in with newer metal bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth. Then, at 9:02 (I checked my watch), the house lights dimmed, and Paul marched onto the stage looking very angry, like he was ready to kick some ass. He hit the hi-hat twice, signaling the beginning of "Bitter Peace", and a lot of cups and bottles went flying in the air during the heavy part of the song. Then the fast part started, and BOOM! The pit erupted into madness. It was general admission seating, so I was lucky enough to get up front, but I was crushed against the railing. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, though. After War Ensemble (3rd song), Tom said some things to the crowd, like "Anyone here see us on Ozzfest?" A bunch of people cheered, and he said, "Thanks for coming back out to see us again, man, we fuckin' appreciate it and we're gonna put on a good show for you, much longer than the one on Ozzfest." Everyone cheered wildly. The rest of the night was very hard, very fast, and a lot longer than I expected. They also played a few songs that I didn't expect them to, including a few off of Show No Mercy (which was a nice surprise)! They changed the set up a lot from the last time I saw their full live show, which was nice. I remember the exact order because I taped the show, even though it turned out kind of poorly, I still am willing to trade it for anyone who wants a copy. |
