In one word, PERFECT ! The show was simply perfect.
Everything began at about 18.00, when a heavy metal myth was broken. Kerry King and Paul Bostaph, 2 metal icons, arrived at the Transbordeur. In a Peugeot 405 (a French middle-class car!). Me and some friends were waiting next to the tour bus, when an incredible sound came. The band was doing the soundcheck, they played Gemini and Scrum. The sound of the drums was terrifc. 20.30, the opening band, Abkhan, a French band from Rennes, was a little strange. The music was a mix between Sepultura and Biohazard, but their attitude was the one of an hip hop band. And as you know, the Slayer audience is very hard to satisfy in their musical taste. This was the first time, that I saw a guy reading in the first row when a band was playing !!! Then, at about 21.45, the original "Hand of doom" comes to our ears, then the Slayer version. Then, total darkness, Paul, Jeff, Kerry and Tom arrive, very cool, and Tom says "Bonsoir Lyon, ca va?" (Hi, Lyon, how are you doin'?) On Evil has no boundaries, Tom makes us scream "Can you say EEEEEEEEVVVVVVVIIIIIILLLLLL?" Total destruction, bodies were flying through the air, the security members couldn't believe their eyes. During Scrum, Kerry's guitar was dead, that was making Tom hilarious!!! I think there's an omen with Kerry's guitar and shows in France (in 1997, in Paris, Kerry played bass 'cause his amps were dead!) The higher level of pain was, of course, Raining Blood. I thought I'm gonna loose my head, due to headbanging! Tom learned a new French word. In Chemical Warfare, he screamed "encule", when he usauly screams Fuck it all (or something like that). And the final act: ANGEL OF DEATH. I never seen a mayhem like that (even at a Pantera show !) At the end, Tom and Kerry came to the pit to take some pictures with the fans (thanx por the pic, Tom). The greatest concert I have ever seen in my life, more powerful than Pantera, Grip inc, Sepultura, Machine Head and Slipknot together. |
