We got to the venue just as Sepultura were taking the stage. We were near
the back and had a hard time seeing the stage since it was in the middle of
a horse pasture, and the people who were moshing were kicking up a lot of
dust, making it hard to see the stage.
Next was Sevendust. They were pretty good. I'd seen them before at Ozzfest. THEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE MIGHTY SLAYER!!! We were up near the front so I could see everything. Each side of the stage had 12 Marshalls, as is customary with Slayer. They walked out on stage, and without saying a word, launched into Madatory Suicide. Next was War Ensemble. Kerry's guitar cut out about halfway through. The third song was Bitter Peace, and Jeff's guitar quit on him. I watched as he walked toward the backstage area and hollered something at one of the roadies. The roadie came over and was playing with the wireless transducer on Jeff's guitar strap. Because of all of this, Jeff missed his solo in Bitter Peace. The rest of their set pretty much went off without a hitch. Slayer appeared to either be pissed off, or tired. It took the sound guys until about halfway through Slayer's set to get the sound right. Maybe they were pissed because of all the technical problems. Maybe they were tired from just having returned from Europe only a few days before. Who knows. Slayer took the stage at 5:40pm and played a one hour set. Tom Araya dedicated "Stain Of Mind" to the crowd saying, "Nobody likes the way you look, nobody likes the way you dress, people don't like the music you listen to. People can't accept the fact that you smoke pot and drink beer. We're all a little touched in the head, aren't we?" Pretty cool stuff. |
