Ozzfest north of the border?!? Usually Ozzfest goes only to Toronto in
Canada, and I beleive some years it has never come to Canada. Needless to
say, when I got news that it was coming I lost it. Anyways, the line-up on
the mainstage this year was Godsmack, Primus, Slayer, Deftones, Rob Zombie,
and of course, the original members of Sabbath. I missed Godsmack's set, and
got there just as Primus opened up.
I never was a Primus fan before this day, but they kicked ass. Claypool has an awesome stage presence, and oh yeah, he's pretty good at playing bass to. They played all of their classics, (Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, Tommy the Cat, etc.) but for the last song of their set, they brought out Buckethead, and holy shit!!! Buckethead was doing things I've never heard nor conceived that could be done on a guitar. They ripped. Slayer took the stage at about about 4:20 ironically enough, and opened with Raining Blood. The crowd went absolutely insane and it didn't stop for the duration of their set. From Raining Blood they went directly into War Ensemble and from there things got even more crazy. I have never seen in person or on ANY video a response to one band like today. For anyone who has a bootleg, or access to this footage, please post it here!!! Slayer's set went something like this (the order might be a bit screwed in the middle, I was thouroughly inebriated): Raining Blood, War Ensemble, Stain of Mind, Dead Skin Mask, South of Heaven, Bitter Peace, Mandatory Suicide, Chemical Warfare, Angel of Death. Before Stain of Mind Tom Araya acknowledged how crazy the crowd was, "It looks like we now know who you crazy fucks came to see today". During Angel of Death, King fucked up a bit in the intro part but only periodically. While they were playing Angel of Death the screen behind the stage was projecting images of Josef Mengele (the sick fuck who the song was wrote about) and images of the mass burial sites at Auschwitz, piles of dead bodies, etc. It was heavy!! After Slayer, the Deftones took the stage and shit the barn for an hour and twenty minutes. Slayer was only given 45 minutes, what a crock of shit. After the Deftones played, Zombie took the satge and the highlight of his set was when Kerry King came out and played Thunder Kiss 65 with them. Original Sabbath was awesome as well, almost surreal. Ozzy fucked the lyrics up left right and center, but Iommi/Butler were a thousand times better musically then they were in the old days. They covered all the classics (War Pigs opened their set, N.I.B., Snowblind, Children of the Grave). They surprised me by playing Into the Void, that fucking rocked!! On a whole, the day ruled, best show I've ever seen!! And once again, if anyone has access to live footage of this show, post it, or send it to me please!!! |
