I pulled up to the venue about 4 hours before the show and a line had already
formed. Suprised, I parked and ran over to the line and got my spot at
about 5th. Everyone in line portrayed a SLAYER fan, long hair, cutt-off
shirts, boots, and punctuality (being the first ones there).
As the the time grew near, the line had to be separated into 2 because the croud was soo big. I saw a late 30's, early 40's lady with her crippled husband (in wheelchair) entering the line with their antique SLAYER shirts on, true SLAYER fans. We also got a chance to check out SLAYER drive by in there Suburban and when we all recognized them, the whole line went crazy. SLAYER was here, SLAYER was in my home town, FINALLY!!! When the doors opened, I grabbed my spot before anyone else. After sitting there for a few moments, I took a look around at the hurd of SLAYER fans pouring in. feeling a little restless from my 4 hour wait, I put my hands up high with my horns spiked and yelled "SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEEEER!!!!!!!", thus, began a chant. The first band, System of a Down, came on and had an interesting show. The one white-haired guitarist with a little patch of long hair on the top of his head really did some odd, yet interesting moves which made me chuckle a bit, but got me into their music. They played for about an hour and then "Clutch" came on. This was the only disappointing part of the show. In no way did those guys deserve to play with SLAYER. They were like a modern rock, we're a buncha sissies with guitars kinda band. I think Pearl Jam was looking for an opener. I thought it would never end, but after an hour and a half they were gone...finally. After 30 minutes of settin up, tuning, etc. the lights went out and floor started to move. The long anticipated wait for SLAYER to come to San Diego started taking its toll and everyone started pitting before they even hit the stage. The fog rolled in so thick that I could barely see the sweaty hog next to me. Then the sweet chant, "join us, join us..." played backwards in the beginning of HELL AWAITS came on in the darkness. The chanting became screams and then, "WELCOME BAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!" BOOM!!! the lights went on and there they were, heads banging and the music blaring. I felt a surge of power from their amps through my body and I just lost control and went nuts. The energy level was intense the whole 2 hour show as they went through all the good songs like Raining Blood, War Ensemble, Angel of Death, Spirit in Black, Necrophiliac, and Black Magic. They also through in some of there new songs from Diabolus in Musica, but I don't remember exactly which ones cause this was a long time ago. They played a bunch of other good songs too, but I remember them leaving out some songs that I had hoped that they would play, but regardless it was an insane show. On the last song, Angel of Death, right in the middle of the song all the power went out for about 5 seconds and all the lights went out and all u could hear was the beat of the drums in the distance. Once the power kicked back in, the lights came on and they were perfectly together...it was so sick!! After the show I left with 2 picks from Jeff and Kerry and my ears ringing (which lasted for about 2 days). It was so long ago so I don't have a set list, sorry! |
