Slayer played at the Hordern Pavillion with Machine Head and Frankenbok.
I missed most of Frankenbok so I won't say anything about them.
Machine Head came on just after 8.00 - I haven't seen them live before so I was looking forward to it. Their set was quite short. They played 3 or 4 from The Burning Red, 3 or 4 from Burn My Eyes, as well as Ten Ton Hammer, and a song from their new album called Bulldozer. They got a pretty good response from the crowd - but tonight was all about the mighty Slayer.
Just before 9.30 the lights went down, the smoke machines started up and we got a taped playing of the first song on God Hates Us All, Darkness of Christ. This just got the crowd fired up, so when the lights went up and the guys were on the stage and slammed right into Raining Blood the place went nuts. Just like in Korea they played the full version of the song. I brought God Hates Us All a few days before the show, and was hoping to hear some songs off it that hadn't been played live before. But all we got was Bloodline, Disciple and Here Comes the Pain. About half way through Tom asked us if we were ready for the Pain - but I something went wrong and the band wasn't ready for the pain - Tom said they had their wires crossed, and instead he was going to tell us about two whores that came up from hell, Captor of Sin. Here Comes the Pain came up after that. At this point a chant for "Angel of Death" started. Tom said they could play that now if we wanted, but after it finished they'd be walking off the stage. A whole lot of people starting booing. I was surprised that so many people didn't know it's normal for Slayer to finish with Angel of Death. I was hoping for 30 or 40 more songs before Angel of Death. Anyway, they played a couple more songs, I think it was Seasons and Dead Skin Mask. Then Tom said they were gonna play the good shit now. For me this was the best part of the show - Postmortem, straight into Altar of Sacrifice, into the intro of Jesus Saves, into Chemical Warfare, all without gaps in between songs. They finished of with South of Heaven and Angel of Death. It was a great experience to see Slayer for the first time in three years, even though the crowd was a bit lame at times, it didn't matter. I was surprised there was nothing from Divine Intervention, and only one from Diabolus - but i guess most people wouldn't be too disappointed by that. Kerry and Jeff were their usual selves - no signs of aging at this show. Tom's voice is as great as ever - he still manages to get up there for the scream at the start of Angel of Death. I'm glad i'm seeing them two more times on this tour. Hopefully the setlist will change a bit to get some songs i haven't heard before. |
