Last night was my 6th time of having the pleasure to see Slayer in concert. We
arrived at 7 p.m. Waited in line till about 8, then we got inside. The Grove
of Anaheim is a very nice place inside. It was all downstairs, but had about 3
different levels of standing. The first however many people were able to get
down in the pit. Fortunately, me and my friends were able to make it down
there. I could not stand sharing the same floor with all the inarticulate
Hatebreed bastards. I had to hear all night until Hatebreed came on, " Oh fool,
Hatebreed is tight!!" There was an effotless amount of those morons. The stage
was a moderately large size, and we were about 7 feet from it.
The first band to come on was the undesired "Diecast". I knew right when they approached the stage without even strumming a note, that they were going to suck, and have that identical nu-metal sound that your average warm up band has. What I really can't stand about these bands, besides the fact that the guitarists cant bust out any decent solos, is the goddamn singer that is shouting his lungs out and then the next second he is screaming like his sac is locked in a vice. The only talent in that band was the drummer. He was pulling off some excessively fast double bass. His drumming skills were incredible as well. Very fast and technical, with somewhat of a jazz kind of way that he held his stick in his left hand. I wonder how the hell he plays so fast holding his sticks the way he did. He belongs in a thrash or death metal band, because he is obviously meant to be one, and not in a hideous nu-metal band. They had about a 25 minute set, which was way too long to stand through a lurid band like them. Hatebreed was the next unworthy band to come on the stage. I actually think that Hatebreed sucked more than Diecast did. The reason being for that is all Hatebreed's vocalist did was shout, guitarist was pure noisy nonsense, and the drummer did nothing impressive. At least Diecast had one good feature about them. The singer heavily irritated me by constantly commenting about " true metal, no rap rock shit ". While this fruitcake was dressed as a pure trend, that looks like he should of been on an MTV dating show instead. And backstage the guitarist was dressed like he was going to record a few mixes with Grandmasta Funk, while the drummer and bassist had all the rap jewelry on, with shirts saying dumb things like "Pimp". So don't expect me to have any respect for Hatebreed, because I don't. Their set was about 35 minutes, which seemed to be endless. Finally they were finished and up next, the metal gods, SLAYER!!! We moved up as close as we could to watch the masters at work. There were still many Hatebreed followers there, who have probably never seen a Slayer pit before. And they were soon to find out that it is the most extreme and unmatched pit out there. About 40 mintues after Gaybreed got off stage, the lights all of a sudden went off....... DARKNESS OF CHRIST!!!! This song really gets you pumped up. You know in about one mintue, the whole place will be going insane and into total chaos. Immediately when they opened with Disciple, the whole pit area was going nuts. The whole setup was flawless. I was able to hear every lead Hanneman and King played, every word Araya sang, and every drum that Dave Lombardo hit. For all of you people that think Vinnie Paul has the best live drum sound, then you are wrong!!! I have never ever heard a drum set sound so good live, until I heard Lombardo. He had a much more powerful and gut tearing sound that Bostaph ever had live. It seems that our set list was abbreviated, because after War Ensemble they did not play At Dawn They Sleep, instead they went into Stain of Mind. " Are you ready for something off of Reign In Blood??? " POSTMORTEM!!! What a killer song live, and how better to perform it as how it is on Reign In Blood, with Raining Blood to follow. As everyone knows, Raining Blood is a signature mosh song, it defines the term. Next was the song that has one of the best intros ever in thrash metal history, HELL AWAITS!!! Hearing them play the original songs with Lombardo was absolutlely mind blowing, especially the drumming on this track. Next it was time for something from Seasons, which was Born Of Fire. After that, it was time to return to God Hates Us All, with Bloodline. Besides Disciple, Bloodline seems to be the next most known song from that album. Next it was time for some Show No Mercy!!! Answer me this.. " If you live by the sword, then you WILL....." I think we all know what song this is, the ass kicking, DIE BY THE SWORD!! The two following songs were God Send Death and Captor of Sin. Both were performed very will with all of their effort put into them. Again, it is time for some more stuff from Seasons!! Tom gave his usual speech that he always does before Dead Skin Mask, which broke into Seasons In The Abyss. Hanneman played a whole different solo then he does on the album, but it still ripped and had a great sound to it. Before we moved onto the last 4 songs of the night, the level of agression was turned up a notch by cranking out Payback. This was my first time hearing Payback live. The last show I was at they played New Faith instead. Finally, we get some Mandatory Suicide!! From my favorite album South of Heaven. This song is easily in my top 5 list of favorite live Slayer songs. Now, its time for one of the best thrash tunes ever, CHEMICAL WARFARE!!!! This song is a necessity at all Slayer shows. Encore time.... The place goes black. Slayer chanting is going, lots of cheers, everyone filled with anticipation for South of Heaven. BEFORE YOU SEE THE LIGHT, YOU MUST DIEEEEEE!!!!!! Goddamn, that is the perfect song for an encore. And the closer, which is the mandatory song at every Slayer show, and just happens to be the signature song of Thrash Metal, ANGEL OF DEATH!!!! This song delivered the biggest pit of the night. Once again, the gods have provided us with a perfect show. On the way out, is when the night started to get big. Me and my friends I was with, scored some backstage passes!! We got right into the back without a problem, real genuine passes. We waited for about 45 minutes, and Dave Lombardo came walking out with his wife and kids. After him, Kerry walked out with a couple bo half full of hard liqour, one which was Vodka. We asked to take a picture with him and his reply was "let me dump these first" heheh. Dump, or demolished by Dr. Evil ?!?!? I hows would say demolish. We talked to him, took a picture, and next Jeff Hanneman came walking out. I had the honor of taking a picture with my idol, and having a conversation with him. We talked about his signature series guitar which I soon shall be getting, and about the Kings and Sharks. Tom never came out, and it was time we had to get going. I have met Tom before, but still I would of loved to talk to him again. At least I have had the pleasure of meeting him though. What a better way to end the night after seeing the gods perform a flawless show. SLAYER FUCKIN SLAYER!!!!! My last comment about the show, is that Dave Lombardo was meant to be there. He is meant to be behind the kit with Slayer. I truly believe that they played better with him than Paul. He is the best drummer I have ever heard, and together with Araya, Hanneman, and King, they make Slayer. The best thrash metal band of all time. That is the lineup that is meant to be!!! |
