I showed up at about 9:30 so I didn't have to sit through another tired
metal act in Hatebreed or Diecast, unfortunately the line was all the way
down the block, and was way behind. I was about 30 people until the door
when Slayer started. I knew it was slayer because they started so late, but
couldn't make out the song. Finally I got through the door right in the
middle of War Ensemble. The crowd was almost all in black, or with shirts
off (with tatoo's). It was mostly younger people with a couple worked old
guys including me(30 or over..haha)..The pit was at about Mach 10, the
typical frenzied pace for a Slayer show.
Basically there were groups of Skinheads on the outside surrounding the pit trying to look as cool as you can making 10 bucks an hour for a living...U know typical bad-ass scowl trying to intimidate everyone. If you even brushed them they slammed you aside and all converged like a school of Piranha's going for a hot-dog.....What would you expect from someone with a pea-sized brain...Anyway, Slayer KICKED ASS....the sound was right on, and they didn't miss a beat. These guys get better with age, I saw them in 86 in the Hollywood Palladium Riot show (Danzig's first ever live appearance) and they blew themselves away. Tom was his usual self, black shirt, pants, warped face. His Screams were right on..Between songs he usually has some meaningless intro, but didn't say much at all, until Die By the Sword..."THey say the pen is mightier than the sword!"..and the crowd replied correctly.....Kerry King looked pretty huge, he banged his fat hairless head hard on every song, I swear he even look at his guitar when playing. He knows where every note is, the Guy rips live!....Hanneman was an animal, I CANNOT BELIEVE how fast his wrist was moving, Jesus Christ! I've tried for years to play that fast and I'm convinced he was born to be in Slayer..It's like watching a video in fast forward. His down picking is incredible, and you can't see his hand at all it's a godamm blur...He was totally into it as well. Awesome stage presence. NOBODY plays live with more precision, passion and velocity..Dave Lombardo was his old self, sweet double bass with some really cool fills over new material..It's great to see all these guys still together while everyone else in Music fails ????????miserably..It's a tribute to that type of music..Even the new shit sounded killer live....All the other offspring metal bands from Slayer (Deicide,Morbid,etc..) don't even come close..Slayer is the ultimate Live band, they started it all and will always have the last word..... |
