What a night. Simply unbelievable. Slayer – Perfect. What more could you ask for. This was only the second time I’d seen Slayer, a short 50-minute set at the Ozzfest last year just does not do them justice. But I thought they were breathtaking then. This was a million times better. Even though I was only seeing them for the second time, I new this gig was something special. One that stood out from the rest. I could tell from the atmosphere and the reactions around me. Everything on the night was perfect. The Band, the performance, the line up, the set list, the atmosphere, the sound quality, even the fuckin’ support band was good. Lamb of God had a good idea of how to get the crowd going. Not an easy task, supporting the mighty Slayer. But they knew they were to be outclassed in everyway, and settled for second best, another thing that made them better than the average metal band. The ‘Wall Of Death’ - got everybody riled up.
Like at Ozzfest, the guys kept us eagerly waiting, after Lamb of God. The Intro tape sounded – ‘Darkness Of Christ’, me and my mates new what was opening.
DA DEEEEERRRR DA DEEEEERRRRR DA DER……….. DISCIPLE! The whole floor ripped and tore apart, Kerry King, just 2 meters (if that) in front of me shook his head as his legendary fingers played the notes I attempt at home. My Idol, looking at me, AT ME! Those of you who experience the front, crushed up against the barrier, you KNOW when they look at YOU! You know when they grit their teeth and roar at YOU!.….SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tom Araya, smirking at me and guys next to me, mocking or metal horns beating in time to the music. We were at one with Slayer. The Crowd and the band. They welcomed us as friends and we all new that this was what they played for, for us. Jeff comes over during ‘Seasons’, pointing a finger to his head and staring at me and my buddies, ‘as you go insane, go insaaaaaaaaaaaane!!!’ And the set! The most amazing and most unlikely set a Slayer fan could wish for. All the classics, the usual, brilliant trash and……….the whole of Reign In Blood, all the way through!!!!!!!! Just as we thought they were finishing with Angel Of Death, they played right through to finish with Raining Blood. (Set list included at the bottom) To top it off, I got Jeff Hannemann’s fuckin pick!!!!!!!! Yyyeeehhhh! Spoke to Kerry King too, as he dropped a pick behind him, and I pointed it out. He didn’t see it and thought I was playing a trick, we exchanged words and laughed. Best of all, (especially for the guy, my main man James Rogers) as Kerry sounded the final chord after his satanic wailing at the end of Raining Blood, he pointed and coolly nodded at my friend, as he was wearing an L.A. Raiders t-shirt. Kerry, Jeff, Tom, and even Dave, hidden away at the back (What a God he is, the best drummer ever!!!) are part of the crowd, and we were part of the performance. Big thanks to the Slayer guys, for not separating us from them, a thank you to the lads with me Rhodesy, Martin and Rogers, and a massive thanks to the rest of the slayer crowd, the community. Everyone had a good time, and nobody got hurt, the way it should be. |
